"In the following correspondence the letters of Goethe have been printed from the originals now in the possession of Mrs. Alexander Carlyle ... The letters of Carlyle are printed from a careful copy of the originals now preserved in the Goethe archives at Weimar."--Pref.

Each letter of Goethe's is followed by an English translation.

"Appendix I. Dedication and introduction by Goethe to the translation of Carlyle's Life of Schiller" (translation of "Zuschrift an die hochansehnliche Gesellschaft fu?r ausla?ndische scho?ne literatur zu Berlin" in T. Appendix II ("note by Goethe, which he had intended to accompany the Ka?stchen, announced in his letter to Carlyle of the 6th of June 1830 [and which] had evidently never reached its destination; the original being now in private hands in Weimar. It was printed in the Grenzboten; Goethiana: Zu Goethes verha?ltnis zu Carlyle, von E. Fu?gel, III, 1885". It includes an explanatory note by Goethe on the Chaos, a Weimar weekly paper, for private circulation, edited by Ottilie von Goethe) p. [324]-342.
