William A. Green

William A. Green (1935 -)

William A. Green has been Professor Emeritus of History at Holy Cross College, Worcester, Massachusetts since his retirement in 2001.

He had earned his Doctorate in history at Harvard University before becoming a member of the Holy Cross history faculty since 1964 "when it resembled a small parochial institution with a fairly narrow clientele", he has served twice as department chair and has held a position “on virtually every committee at the College”, the most important being the Educational Policy Committee and the Committee on Tenure and Promotion. Green has twice served as the chair of the history department and was the director of the College Honors Program for four years.

He published one of his most recognized work in 1976 "British Slave Emancipation: The Sugar Colonies and the Great Experiment, 1830-1865".

Since 1990, Green had been the College’s coordinator for the Clark-Holy Cross May Term in Luxembourg program. He was also responsible for launching the study of environmental history and initiating an institution-wide program in environmental studies. Green’s fields of interest included modern Britain and the British Empire, European world empires since 1500, and environmental history.

He has also contributed to six books in European and imperial history covering slavery, indentured labor, and plantation society and has written many articles for professional journals, including Comparative Studies in Society and History, The Economic History Review, The Journal of British Studies, Victorian Studies, Albion Journal, Caribbean Studies, The Journal of African History, The Journal of Interdisciplinary History, and The Journal of World History.

In September 2000 he was recognized as a dedicated faculty member and received the Holy Cross Distinguished Teaching Award.

William Green retired after 37 years at Holy Cross in 2001.
