Edition Notes

Half-title: Cantares mexicanos.
Colophon: La presente obra comenzóse á imprimir...el an͠o del Sen͠or de mil novecientos cuatro y se acabó el mes de julio de mil novecientos seis.
A collection of Aztec songs in the original, reduced to the Spanish alphabet, apparently compiled by a Spanish priest during the 17th century. In the opinion of the editor, Dr. Pen͠afiel, many of the songs date from before the conquest. 27 of them were translated into English by Daniel G. Brinton and published in his Ancient Nahuatl poetry, Philadelphia, 1887. The original manuscript includes, besides the songs, a Mexican calendar and several sermons and other religious works. cf. "Noticia historica". Pages [23]-27 contain seven cantos, translated into Spanish verse by C. A. Robelo.
