Who owns the land? A preliminary report for the northeast states

Extract: The USDA recently conducted a nationwide survey of the ownership of privately held land. More than 37,000 individuals, partnerships, and corporations were surveyed in 1978 by the ESCS in an effort to find out more about 28.8 million owners of 1.25 billion acres of privately held U.S. land. The survey covered farm and ranch land, other rural land, and urban land. This report presents statistics for Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont. The data highlights relationships on occupation of owners, type of owners, their race, age, sex, education, and residence. The method and timing of land acquisition is also highlighted for the region and for individual states.
