520 $a"The hymns of Luke's infancy narratives, the Magnificat, Benedictus, and Nunc Dimittis as they are commony known, are a familiar part of the liturgies of many Christian traditions. And yet their origin is uncertain, their meaning debated and their significance in Luke-Acts as a whole often unconsidered. In response to this situation, this book presents an analysis of the various scholarly theories regarding the origins of the hymns, a thorough exegesis of the hymns themselves and a concluding essay discussing their role in Luke-Acts as a whole. The author argues that these magnificent psalms were composed in Hebrew in early Jewish-Christian circles. They were then placed by the evangelist in their present, striking position at the head of the Luke-Acts, in order to anticipate certain key themes recurring in the two volume work."--$cFrom back cover.
