520 8 $aAnnotation$bCheung (Asian Theological Seminary, Philippines) explores the historical causes and circumstances that allowed certain Protestant churches in Banlam, South Fujian, to undertake the first successful indigenization-union experiment in 19th-century China. By indigenization, he means the ecclesiastical devolution of mission churches<-->the transfer of authority from missionaries to native leaders<-->rather than recasting the Christian message into Chinese terms or forms. He focuses on churches connected with the missions of the (Dutch) Reformed Church in America and the Presbyterian Church in England. Cheung is also known as Chen Yiqiang.
