520 $aIn late 1996 a national scandal erupted when Defense Department officials admitted to the existence of a "torture manual" used to train officers of some of the most abusive regimes in Latin America. But this was only the latest in a long series of revelations surrounding the activities at the infamous School of the Americas at Fort Benning, Georgia. In School of Assassins, author Jack Nelson-Pallmeyer documents the hidden reality of a school that has left a trail of suffering and death in every Latin American country where its graduates have returned. In tiny El Salvador, SOA graduates were responsible for the massacre of six Jesuit priests, their housekeeper and her daughter, the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero, the rape and murder of four U.S. church women, and many other atrocities.
