In 2015, ten-year-old sixth-grader Marley Dias launched the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign and book drive to increase awareness and representation of books in which black girls are the main characters, not minor or background characters. Marley recounts her experience in an interview with The Guardian, saying every single year [her school] wanted [them] to read a book about a white boy and his dog. Dias conceived of the #1000BlackGirlBooks campaign with the goal of identifying and collection 1,000 empowering books black girls. In just a few months, the project had raised more than 9,000 books.
The Internet Archive is inspired by Dias's example to help build a more inclusive educational landscape and proudly serves more than 300 of the #1000BlackGirlBooks titles in their lending library.
